All you need to know about Sophie Toscan du Plantier’s son Pierre-Louis Baudey

Pierre-Louis Baudey is the only son of the late television producer, Sophie Toscan Du Plantier. On December 23, 1996, Plantier’s lifeless body was found on the path outside her holiday cottage in Schull, County Cork, Ireland.

At the time of her death, Sophie Toscan Du Plantier, 39, was married to the French film producer Daniel Toscan du Plantier. They had no children together but both had children from previous marriages.

From her first marriage to Pierre Jean Baudey, Sophie Toscan Du Plantier had a son, Pierre Louis.

Sophie Toscan Du Plantier had traveled to Schull on December 20, 1996, with plans to return home to Paris and spend Christmas with her family. Unfortunately, she never returned.

English freelance journalist Ian Bailey was the main suspect in the Sophie Toscan Du Plantier’s murder. Due to a lack of physical evidence, no charges were brought against him by the Garda (Irish police).

Bailey faced several extradition attempts by France to face questioning over Sophie Toscan Du Plantier’s death but the Irish courts challenged France’s requests.

In May 2019, Bailey was tried in absentia in France and convicted of murder by the Cour d’Assises de Paris for the murder of Sophie Toscan Du Plantier. He received 25 years in prison but has never served time behind bars. The case in Ireland remains unsolved today.

Bailey features in the three-part Netflix documentary Sophie: A Murder in West Cork and gives his side of the story regarding the events following Sophie Toscan Du Plantier’s death.

Members of Sophie Toscan Du Plantier’s family also feature throughout the documentary, remembering the woman she was and sharing her legacy.

They also reflect on the tragedy of her death and their views on Bailey’s alleged involvement.

Who Is Sophie Toscan Du Plantier’s Son Pierre-Louis Baudey?

Sophie Toscan Du Plantier’s son, Pierre-Louis Baudey, was just 15 years old when she was brutally murdered.

At the time of her death, Pierre-Louis was staying at the home of his grandparents in Sologne. His father, Pierre Jean Baudey, drove from Paris to break the harrowing news to his teenage son in person.

Speaking in the Netflix documentary, Sophie: A Murder in West Cork, Pierre-Louis reflected: “I was a little boy, an only child.

“I was extremely close to mum. It was a sudden transformation from childhood to adulthood… A little part of us all crumbled.”

Pierre-Louis and his family believe Bailey was involved in Sophie Toscan Du Plantier’s murder. Although Bailey is technically still a freeman despite being convicted of murder in French courts, Pierre-Louis remains adamant justice will come.

Speaking after the guilty verdict, Pierre-Louis Baudey said in a statement: “If Bailey continues to slip through the net. I assure you I will make sure the net comes down on Bailey.”

Since his mother’s death, Pierre-Louis Baudey, 40, has campaigned for justice for his mother and answers for his family.

In 2017, Pierre-Louis Baudey and the Plantier family founded The Association for the Truth About Sophie Toscan du Plantier and he continues to investigate his mother’s death himself.

Today, Pierre-Louis Baudey lives in France with his wife Aurelia and two children, Sophie and Louis.

He also regularly returns to Schull, West Cork, the site of his mother’s murder.

Speaking to The Independent Baudey revealed he had seen Bailey in the flesh “two or three times” in Ireland but it will not stop him from returning.

He said: “Bailey may have taken away my mother’s life but he will not take away my freedom to go back to Ireland.”
