Demon Slayer season 3 takes place just two short years after Nezuko became a monster

When is Demon Slayer season 3 The Swordsmith Village Arc set and how old are the main characters in the original series?

Demon Slayer is back, with last week’s incredible opening episode to season 3 ‘Someone’s Dream’ being a whopping one-hour-long special.

However, as Tanjiro’s adventure takes him from the Entertainment District to the Swordsmith Village, many fans are curious as to how much time has actually elapsed between the pilot anime episode and now.

Specifically, if we don’t have an exact year; when is Demon Slayer roughly set and how old are each of the main characters in season 3?

When is Demon Slayer season 3 set?

Whilst the exact year is never revealed in the original Demon Slayer manga, the series has been confirmed to be set between 1912 and 1926.

We know this because of the ‘Taisho Era Secrets’ that features at the end of many of the anime episodes, giving fans either humorous skits or added context to an aspect of the episode in question.

The Taisho Era in Japan was a period of time between 1912 and 1926 that coincides with the reign of Emperor Taisho, which was followed by the Early Showa Period.

This time period included the establishment of many modern technologies that can be seen in the Demon Slayer anime, including an active tram service in Asakusa (episode 7) and a locomotive line (Mugen Train).

Producer Yuma Takahashi spoke about the research that went into Demon Slayer with Anime News Network, explaining “With the Taisho period, because it’s not that old, there are a lot of surviving photos in Japan from the era.”

“So the first thing we did was just purchase a bunch of books to use as reference, so we could capture the essence of that period. And while it wasn’t exactly location-scouting related to the Taisho period, in terms of visiting real-life locations, we relied on a trip to the mountains to help illustrate the snowy scenery of episode 1. We found a place where there was tons of snow to inspire us in creating Tanjiro’s homeland, although it was extremely freezing cold, and at one point there was some risk of us getting lost up there.”

How old are the main characters in Demon Slayer?

Demon Slayer features a huge array of characters from different backgrounds and ways of life; however, the ages of these characters will be a surprise to many fans.

The official Fandom page has included dates from the manga, anime, and external canon information to list the ages as followed:
