Doom Eternal is getting a new single-player Horde mode instead of Invasion | VGC

Id Software has confirmed it is developing a new single-player Horde mode for Doom Eternal.

The newly announced mode will come at the expense of the previously planned multiplayer Invasion mode, which would have enabled users to take on the form of demons and invade other players’ campaigns.

In a development update on Friday, executive producer Marty Stratton also confirmed that Id Software is planning to refresh Battlemode, which sees one fully-armed Doom slayer taking on two player-controlled demons in round-based battles.

Further details about the updates will be shared at QuakeCon, which will be held digitally from August 19-21.

“As many are aware, we intended to release a free Invasion Mode update for the game; however, the unforeseen consequences of the pandemic and remote working impacted the progress of development for this addition,” Stratton said.

“Over this time, we have also seen and heard how many of you enjoy the range of gameplay and combat available in the expansions and master levels. With these factors in mind, we have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a totally new single-player horde mode. We’re confident this horde mode will offer you more of the diversity and challenge you’re looking for in the game.

“In addition, the team continues to work on a refresh of Battlemode that includes a more competitive, rank-based structure, a number of gameplay and balance updates and another new map. We expect to share more information at QuakeCon in August.”

The Xbox Series X/S and PS5 version of Doom Eternal received graphical upgrades as part of a free update released on June 29. PC owners also got an upgrade that added ray tracing on hardware that supports it.
