Warner Bros. and LeBron relaunched the Space Jam franchise in 2021, 25 years after Michael Jordan made the original live-action/animated hybrid hit. While Jordan never made a Space Jam sequel, LeBron James was long expected to be the face of the next installment.

The follow-up to 1996 classic finds this generation’s top NBA star teaming up with the Looney Tunes, much like Michael Jordan did in the original, only this time, LeBron is playing for his son, who has been kidnapped by a rogue A.I. (Don Cheadle). The film was directed by Ryan D. Lee and produced by Ryan Coogler.

Space Jam: A New Legacy Never Thought It Could Be a Good Movie

“Athletes acting, that never goes well.” This throwaway joke uttered by LeBron James in Space Jam: A New Legacy may be the film’s only pseudo-acknowledgment that the first Space Jam wasn’t an unimpeachable masterpiece.

For years, the original 1996 hit, in which Michael Jordan, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and a variety of Looney Tunes were forced to play an intergalactic game of basketball, was one of those movies kids adored and parents forced themselves to sit through.

James, who was 11 when Space Jam came out, was reportedly one of those kids and has now replaced Jordan as the star of the franchise, perhaps setting the stage for a lucrative post-NBA career.

Here’s the good news for King James: Questions about who’s the better player aside, he is certainly a better actor than His Airness ever was, so he’s already overcome one of the earlier movie’s shortcomings.

He also has the advantage of working with journeyman director Malcolm D. Lee (The Best Man, Undercover Brother, Girls Trip), an underappreciated pro who can confidently keep things bouncing along — a step up from the original film’s Joe Pytka, who, despite being an acclaimed commercial director, somehow couldn’t properly frame a close-up.

Stop hating on ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ — we need more movies like it

LeBron James is a total dad in “Space Jam: A New Legacy.” He makes dad jokes. He fails like a dad, he succeeds like a dad and he wins like a dad. It’s one of the many reasons why this new “Space Jam” movie works so well. It’s a family film — a family story that we can all relate to, and one that makes this film much stronger than it might seem on the surface.

And we need more of those. The marketing, the Warner Bros. promotion — none of that matters. What really matters is that this movie has a heart at its center with a positive message about families. We need more movies like it. We need these self-contained family flicks that allow us to reflect on ourselves and how we act in our own families.

The new “Space Jam” has a more modern story. Basically, James finds himself as a flawed father who continues to pressure his children into being basketball stars. But one of his children wants to build video games instead. Fast forward to James and his son going to a meeting at Warner Bros.,

where they end up in a computer room. Soon enough, James’ son is captured by Al G. Rhythm, the leading artificial intelligence of Warner Bros. James must then create a team to take on Al G. Rhythm’s squad. Otherwise, LeBron James and his entire family will have to stay in the server-verse forever.

Space Jam 2 Live-Action & Voice Cast Guide: What The Actors Look Like

Once LeBron James officially joined Space Jam 2, the movie took shape with producer Ryan Coogler and director Malcolm D. Lee. Space Jam: A New Legacy focuses on LeBron James’ life as he attempts to connect with his youngest son, Dom (Cedric Joe). While LeBron wants Dom to focus on basketball and follow in his footsteps on the court, Dom has an interest in video games.

This effort to forge a better relationship leads LeBron to invite Dom to a meeting at Warner Bros. about a new piece of technology, Warner 3000, that LeBron could be the face of. However, his disinterest in the product results in him and Dom being brought into Warner Bros.’

media library, which is run by an advanced AI known as Al G. Rhythm (Don Cheadle). To try and save his son from the clutches of Al G., LeBron teams up with Bugs Bunny to reassemble the Looney Tunes and win a basketball game.

Space Jam 2: A New Legacy Ending Explained

The classic Looney Tunes mischief that played out in Space Jam: A New Legacy turned out to be key to saving LeBron James’ son (and Bugs Bunny’s friends) in the movie. Similar to the formula used in the 1996 movie with Michael Jordan in the lead role, Space Jam 2 put NBA star, LeBron James, on the court with Bugs Bunny, Sylvester the Cat, Elmer Fudd, and several other Looney Tunes icons.

One of the biggest elements that set James’ Looney Tunes team-up apart from Jordan’s was the concept of the Server-verse, a place run by the sentient computer program, Al-G-Rhythm (Don Cheadle). Rather than getting sucked into an underground world populated by Looney Tunes, Lebron James and his son, Dom (Cedric Joe), were yanked into this massive virtual reality comprised of countless worlds from Warner Bros’ library of movies and TV shows, including Casablanca, the DC Universe, Mad Max, Harry Potter, and more.

Because of this aspect of the Server-verse, viewers were treated to a much different environment for the sequel’s basketball match. A diverse audience of characters that included the likes of King Kong, Batman, Iron Giant, and even Pennywise the Clown were given an opportunity to observe the Tunes action.
