Sylvia Weinstock passes away at 91
Legendary cake designer Sylvia Weinstock sadly passed away on Monday (November 22nd), reports say. The baker’s death comes just two days after her 91st birthday.
Brooklyn-born Weinstock died “peacefully in her home in Tribeca, surrounded by her loving family”, according to People.
Notable for her luxury wedding cake designs, the baker had been in retirement up until last month when she designed a six-tier cake for Jennifer Gates’ wedding.
Weinstock opened her first cake shop in 1980, a store that offered “cakes by appointment in a little brownstone.”
As her business grew, Sylvia created cakes for a wealth of A-listers, including Mariah Carey and Billy Joel.
Sylvia had survived her husband, Ben, who died in 2018 at 93-years-old. The two had been married for almost 70 years.
Which famous cakes did the late baker create?
As mentioned, Weinstock was particularly notable for her luxury wedding cakes.
The baker’s work was so sought after, Sylvia designed cakes in the United States, Japan, China, the Middle East, the Caribbean and Europe!
Individuality was important for the cake designer, revealing that each creation was custom-made for the bride. In talks with The Times, Weinstock explained: “The mothers of the bride, who started thinking about their daughter’s wedding the minute they had a girl, would bring tear sheets from magazines with wedding cakes on them.
“These could be 10 years old. I’d use them for inspiration and a jumping point. It gave me a good idea of their taste level. You never want to duplicate something. You always want to create your own. Then I’d sketch out their cake, maybe add watercolor to it. They usually kept this afterward. We’d also do a sampling of cakes. The one-time meeting would last an hour.”
As you’d expect from a cake designer with Sylvia’s talent, the baker received some bizarre and wild requests. Weinstock shared: “We’ve done carved cakes in the shape of a Bentley with the bride and groom figures sitting in it; a copy of the house the couple bought with a for sale sign saying, Just married; a wine crate with six wine bottles in it. We painted the wine labels, which said, From the estate of … with the parent’s name and then the couple’s name; a box with shoes inside for Steve Madden.”
In 2015, Weinstock famously created actress Sofia Vergara’s floral themed, five-tier wedding cake.
The cake creator has also designed for Oprah Winfrey and Robert De Niro, amongst many other A-listers.
