James Maddison not at the top of Tottenham’s list

Speaking on The Athletic’s YouTube channel, Jack Pitt-Brooke has been discussing Tottenham and their reported interest in James Maddison.
The Leicester City midfielder has been linked with Tottenham in recent days, and there’s certainly a level of excitement brewing around this potential transfer.
However, according to Pitt-Brooke this may not be one to get too excited about.
Indeed, the journalist states that while Maddison has been on Spurs’ radar for quite some time, he isn’t at the top of the club’s wishlist for the remainder of the transfer window.
What’s been said?
Pitt-Brooke spoke about Spurs’ interest in Maddison.
“I think this is the one missing piece of the Tottenham squad, what if they want to play in a different way? If they want to play a 3-4-3 they don’t need James Maddison, but if Conte decides he wants an extra midfielder and use a 3-5-2 to unpick the defence in that way, maybe it would make sense,” Pitt-Brooke said.
“He’s clearly been on the Tottenham Hotspur radar for a very long time. I can just about see why it may work for them this summer, but clearly he’s not top of the list and he wasn’t top of the list at the start of the summer, but there would be a lot of upside if they were able to pull it off.”
Unnecessary
Maddison, of course, has the potential to be a fantastic signing for Spurs, but at this moment in time, it would be an unnecessary addition.
Let’s face it, you’re not signing a 25-year-old England international who scored 18 goals from midfield last season for cheap, and after already spending in excess of £100m this summer, Spurs can’t really afford to go and splash that much cash on one player.
Yes, he’s very talented, but he doesn’t fit into Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3, and while he’d work in a 3-5-2, that doesn’t seem to be the Italian’s preferred system these days.
Maddison isn’t Spurs’ priority right now, and, to be honest, he probably shouldn’t be.
