Actor Ben Roberts, who is most known for his role as Chief Inspector Derek Conway on ITV’s long running show The Bill, has died at the age of 70.
Ben was born in Bangor in July 1950 and his first television role was in A Woman’s Place in 1978. He has also appeared in crime drama The Professionals and had a small role in Doctor Who in 1984.
The actor’s more recent roles include Briggs in Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre in 2011 and Jean in A Little Chaos in 2014, dir. by Alan Rickman. In 2016 he appeared in Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children, dir. by Tim Burton.

Ben Roberts, who is most known for his role on The Bill, has died at the age of 70. His former agent confirmed the news, and wrote:
“Remembering the wonderful Ben Roberts who sadly passed away on Monday. Best known as Chief Inspector Derek Conway in The Bill & he had an extensive career in theatre, TV & film. Our thoughts are with his wife Helen & family at this time.”
Ben played the role of Chief Inspector Derek Conway in The Bill from 1987 to 2002.
Tributes for Ben poured in online following the news of his death, including one from actor Martin Delaney who wrote:
“Ben was in the episodes of my first ever experience on The Bill – a three-part special that we made. He kept the morale up on a few long night shoots! Years later when doing Family Affairs, we shared studios with The Bill. Used to see him around a lot – a true character. RIP Ben.”

Ben Roberts’ wife is Helen Lloyd, an audiobook narrator and former continuity announcer for ITV.

Ben is survived by his wife Helen, his son Joe, and his granddaughter Elsie.
