Who remembers watching Nickelodeon cartoons when they were at their peak? There were the glory days of the 90s with Rugrats & Rocko’s Modern Life. Then there were classics like Spongebob Squarepants & Fairly OddParents. Even their live-action shows were pretty top-notch. For the past several years, Nickelodeon has been in a bit of a slump, but it looks like that is about to change in a big way.
Nickelodeon is starting to catch up to the rest of television in the era of streaming. Nick’s executive Brian Robbins has been tasked with getting new shows, and reboots of old favorites, out on the channel and on Paramount Plus. Robbins has already revived Spongebob, alongside spin-offs Kamp Koral and The Patrick Star Show, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which has a movie coming next month.
The new strategy includes revivals of live-action shows like iCarly. It will also see some of Nickelodeon’s best cartoons being brought into live-action as well. Most of what’s coming has yet to be announced, but there are already some exciting projects being developed. We’ll catch you up on all things Nickelodeon, right here.
Cartoons & toys have always had a strange relationship, with one often existing to support the other. With Monster High, the toys came first, but the content developed to promote the toy line quickly became more popular than the toys themselves. Since the toys launched in 2010, Monster High has spawned books, shows, movies, and video games, all based on a high school that’s home to teenage humans and famous monsters.
Nickelodeon is working on a live-action film based on Monster High. The movie will also be a musical, and it will feature all the fan-favorite characters from the other forms of Monster High media. The movie musical is already in production, and it’s due to arrive on Nickelodeon sometime in 2022.
One famous Nickelodeon cartoon took the concept of fairy godparents in a whole new direction. Fairly OddParents followed young Timmy Turner, a boy with neglectful parents and an abusive babysitter, who gets two fairy godparents, Cosmo and Wanda. The two are responsible for granting Timmy’s wishes, which often lead the three of them into all kinds of hijinks.
Fairly OddParents was one of Nickelodeon’s most successful cartoons. The show ran for ten seasons and 172 episodes. There have been hints and rumors of a movie in the past, but this February Nickelodeon made a new announcement. They’re rebooting the franchise with a live-action series. The new series will see some returning stars, and it’s currently scheduled to land on Paramount Plus sometime in 2022.
Think back to 2015. Nickelodeon fans were thrilled when the network announced a Who Framed Roger Rabbit?-styled project that would unite all their 90s cartoons in a live-action movie. The ambitious film was supposed to feature all your favorite characters from Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, SpongeBob Squarepants, Rocko’s Modern Life, and more. The internet exploded with the announcement, and then all went quiet.
Later, director Jared Hess revealed that Paramount had rejected the pitch for the film, and it wasn’t going to be made after all. Fans were sorely disappointed, but rumors about the film continued to circulate. After all, the movie idea was just too good to be sidelined forever.
Nickelodeon hasn’t said anything definitive yet, but with their big push for new content, there’s renewed hope that NickToons could become a reality. The movie would be a good way to bring back old fans and promote new shows and spin-offs. We’ll keep our fingers crossed, but for now, only time will tell.
