Zenit hoping to sell Sardar Azmoun to Newcastle, but they aren’t so keen

Newcastle United may well fancy signing Zenit St Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun, but the Russian club have been left waiting for a bid.

With Callum Wilson out injured, you can expect Newcastle to be linked with a new striker every few hours.

Chris Wood, Bamba Dieng, Divock Origi, Patrik Schick, Huge Ekitike… the list goes on and on and on.

Another name is Azmoun, with the Iranian striker seemingly available this month given that he is out of contract this summer.

Sky Sports claimed in December that Newcastle were eyeing a move for Azmoun.

Zenit seemingly got their hopes up. Knowing that Azmoun would be leaving for free, they wanted to sell Azmoun to Newcastle this month.

That’s according to Foot Mercato anyway, who claim that the Russian champions were optimistic about a deal.

There’s just one problem – Newcastle aren’t all that interested and are prioritising other strikers, meaning they haven’t made a bid at all.

Many clubs probably feel a similar way, seeing Newcastle’s new-found riches and believing they can get a slice of the pie.

Unless Newcastle change their mind on Azmoun, it looks like he won’t be heading to St James’ Park.

With 19 goals last season and 10 already this season, the 27-year-old has been in fine form over in Russia.

Newcastle need goals, but it seems that have other plans than signing Azmoun, who has been branded the Iranian Messi in his career.
